One of the sweetest books I’ve ever read is about a vampire…

How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire by Kerrelyn Sparks

How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire (Love at Stake, #1)

The book is seemingly just another paranormal romance involving a vampire and a mortal. Roman Draganesti, the self-loathing male protagonist believes that vampires have no souls and are doomed to spend eternity in hell. Shanna Whelan the female protagonist is a dentist on the run from the mob for viewing a crime that took the life of her best friend. A freak accident with VANNA a vampire nutritional sex toy causes Roman to lose a fang and seek out an emergency dentist lest he remain “damaged” for his immortal life.

Good Impressions

Both characters are realistic and funny. Roman is terribly endearing even with his self-esteem issues. He is a scientist who invented synthetic blood and runs a manufacturing empire but has no real use for love. I feel his loneliness and the reader is allowed to follow Roman’s feelings for Shanna. Shanna is paranoid for good reason and funny but clearly lonely. Their interactions including the hot vampire sex make you root for them to be together.

Kerrelyn Sparks creates a world with vampires flying under the radar in a believable and interesting way. I particularly enjoyed the other food options described for vampires in the Vampire Fusion Cuisine that involved mixing blood with chocolate and other delightful foods. She even mentions the other master vampires complaining because the food line as allowing their women to gain weight. Who knew? The DVN (Digital Vampire Network) with its special event coverage was also a delight.

Not so Good Impressions

There wasn’t anything me that I didn’t like. The characters were all well-crafted and the backstory for both characters was full and explained their quirks so nothing here.

My Rating:

I found this book interesting and comical. I enjoyed all of the characters and the plot. I would’ve liked to know more about what happens to the characters in an epilogue especially since Roman mentioned working on a way that Shanna could have the family she desired. But this is the first book in the Love at Stake Series so maybe we do find out more about what happens to the character.

Dead Ice by Laurell K. Hamilton Review

July 12, 2015 0 Comments

Review: Dead Ice (Anita Blake #24) By Laurell K. Hamilton
Dead Ice (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #24)

Dead Ice is book # 24 in the Anita Blake Series. Anita is a kick ass necromancer/federal agent who also is Queen of Vampires. In this installment Anita is planning her wedding to King Jean Claude, juggling her other relationships to continue her mostly domestic bliss and aiding the feds in solving a zombie porn case in which the zombie's appear to have their souls.

First, let me say that I've been a fan for thirteen years. Laurell K. Hamilton was my first foray into the paranormal romance genre and Anita has been one of my favorite characters as I have continued to delve into the genre.

Good Impressions

Anita is in St. Louis for the majority of the book which I am thrilled about. Laurell has created this entire world of characters and it is great to spend time with them, something that does not happen when the majority of the book takes place off site. I am also glad that we again get to see Richard. Once a hugely important part of the story, Richard still maintains the third spot of the Jean Claude and Anita's triumvirate, but often is only mentioned in passing. Ironically Anita still holds the spot of Lupa in his wolf pack.

The zombie porn plot is interesting and provides a balance for Anita. She still cares about people in general which we see when she has to put down a zombie she created that appears a little too lifelike. She also is concerned about the zombie victim and tries to console her several times in the book despite the horrors the zombie has to contend with. It is a nice reminder that though she can be ruthless, in there somewhere is the Anita we remember from the first ten books.

Not So Good Impressions

The world is too crowded and forcing a reader to remember her entire list of lovers / friends with benefits/ just food warrants a index or inset on the book. It's difficult trying to keep names and character traits in line. There were times when even I a seasoned vet of the series, didn't remember a person or why I should care about them. Then even more characters are introduced...I feel like I need to highlight characters so that when I read their names again I have a clue about Anita's reaction to them or Jean Claude's or Micah's or Nathaniel's.

Also the pacing of the book is thrown off by poly negotiations. Jeez lady, if everything is a negotiation  how does anything ever get decided? This was a problem several times in the book. Yes, there will be a wedding but who shares in a separate commitment ceremony? Anita and her poly arrangement need a tiger but are unsure of  which tiger and whether the tiger should be a women or man. It is too much!!!It takes away from the story and feels too much like real life or work, something I read to get away from.

My Rating:

Honestly, it may be time for me to let this series go.  But if you are looking for another adventure in Anita's world it wasn't too bad.

Slow Burn Series with a Killer Ending

July 07, 2015 0 Comments
I've been reading a new series and going back forth about including it on the blog... but it's won since I think I like it...

The Georgina Kincaid Series is fascinating. The first book Succubus Blues follows the protagonist Georgina, a Succubus who works for hell reluctantly. She finds no lasting pleasure in her job and as such has a fairly normal human life outside of it. She works at a bookstore and is obsessed with her favorite author Seth Mortensen.
Succubus Blues (Georgina Kincaid, #1)

The Good

The fourth book, Succubus Heat was fantastic! I enjoyed almost every moment of it. The push and pull of Georgina and Seth's relationship and the complications of their current partners filled up the pages. After spending some much time with the protagonist the author's story telling ability shines making it easy to fall in love with the character.

The Not So Good

Succubus Heat (Georgina Kincaid, #4)The first book in the series wasn't overly impressive. On the immortal scale of creatures, succubi can be kind of boring. Georgina is no exception. While she was engaging, she didn't have much to add to her world in terms of power. Don't get me wrong she does have a lot of physical encounters, but there were too many characters introduced in the first book. I could barely identify who the other characters were or why they mattered. Eventually though I decided to give the second book a chance. Now here I am, four books later and I'm hooked.

The Verdict:

Ultimately this series was a slow burn for me, the more that I read, the more that I became invested. Georgina seems more human then some of the human characters. She is prone to emotions and making rash decision because of those emotions. The sex scenes are interesting, not risque but appropriately steamy especially when she and Seth have be creative lest she steal time off of his life span. Overall though I like it and am looking forward to continuing the series.
