This Book is Magic!

November 11, 2018 0 Comments

Finally, after many recommendations and my husband’s insistence that I watch the tv show, I finally cracked open the Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness.  I admit I was reluctant because most of the time books don’t measure up to the hype, but I spent five days reading this and I can say with all certainty that it did.

The Discovery of Witches is the story of Diana Bishop, a historian studying alchemy at Oxford University and Matthew Clairmont, a French vampire interested in a manuscript she discovers while doing research. Diana is a witch who rarely practices magic and prefers to pass as human. Initially, Matthew studies her, curious about Diana’s discovery which had been missing for years. Eventually, the two become more than friends as Diana learns more about abilities, the paranormal world and why the manuscript she found has placed her in grave danger.

The Good

I really loved Diana! She was impulsive, strong and very much her own woman despite feeling out of place in the not so normal world. While she grew up knowing about the four types of creatures, she detests using magic and often doesn’t notice she is.  Matthew, on the other hand, is very uptight and controlled and just like the reader is pulled towards Diana and the mystery surrounding her.  There is just something about these two that compelled me to continue reading until the book was over.  Magic or not, I’m still fascinated hours later and struggling to wait for the second book from the library.  The world the author created is incredible and I felt like I was right there with Diana and Matthew as they experienced falling in love and even almost losing one another.

The Not So Good

I couldn't really find anything which is rare for me!

The Verdict:

I regret waiting so long to pick it up! I also feel super smart because the author does an amazing job of adding details to the novel which help illustrate the different time periods and locations.

New Format.... Here comes the minis!

October 06, 2018 0 Comments

First, my apologies! I’d admit my reading has taken a bit of a backseat for a while. Being a mom, newlywed, business owner and full-time genie takes up a lot of time. Eventually, though I realized I missed it. Reading...that is.

Those of you who have spent their lives from page to page understand.  So, after one grueling week, I decided to try Kindle Unlimited and it was a game changer.

In less than a month I’ve almost caught up on my Goodreads challenge and even thought about increasing it.  I only thought about it. Let’s face it, work will get in the way again sooner or later. I need to catch up you on a seriously interesting mix of books I’ve read within the last month.

So here’s the format change.

I’m going to post between 3 to four mini-reviews in each post breaking them up by theme.  First up are the surprise hits: Hard Sell, Star Struck, and Richer than Sin!

Ready?...… Let’s go!

Hard Sell by Lauren Layne
This book is the second in the 21 Wall Street Series by Lauren Layne. This is the first story I’ve read

by the author and it is the tale of smoking hot wonder broker Matt Cannon and PR Maven Sabrina Cross.

It was surprisingly enjoyable! Typically, I don’t read books about Wall Street since most of the time it’s boring, but this was a really sophisticated sexy read. The characters aren’t perfect, and both have to make up for their complicated history. I found myself falling in love with them both and rooting for them to
get their s*** together.

My rating:

Hi Lauren, its great to meet you! I can’t wait to spend more time with your characters.

Starstruck by Sariah Wilson

Starstruck is all about meeting your celebrity crush and totally screwing your best friend. Okay, not really but it did feature Zoe Miller and her celebrity crush Chase Covington. She tweets him and he surprisingly tweets back starting a romance that is super sweet and just a bit salty. It was more wholesome than my typical read but the characters and story were charming. Who wouldn’t have loved to be Zoe?

My Rating:

I’m a die heart romantic and I can wait to read the next one. 😍😍

Richer than Sin by Meghan March

This was a read that came start from the best sellers list! It was pre-kindle unlimited and it was hot enough to make this girl blush. Which is difficult by the way. This begins the star-crossed story of Lincoln Riscoff and Whitney Gable. These two are back to visit a romance that began when they were kids until they were pulled about by family prejudices, misunderstandings, and money.

My Rating:

I’d never read a book by Meghan March but I’m hooked and counting down the seconds until the next book Guilty as Sin is released.

That's all for now! See you next week!
