Misadventures of A Book Addict

April 20, 2018 0 Comments

When I picked up Misadventures of a City Girl, I have to admit the cover got me. It looks gritty and fun and honestly, I was looking for a light-hearted easy read. I'm sure you know how it feels when you have been looking for a new favorite author and it has been awhile since you found one.
So, there I was at the library and decided to take a chance on the book.

Misadventures of a City Girl was written by Meredith Wild and Chelle Bliss. It is the story of recent divorcee Madison Atwood and Luke Dawson, a handsome stranger she meets after going on a retreat. They go through quite a few awkward scenes before getting to know one another and ultimately falling in love.

The Good

I kind of liked Madison but often the bickering between her and Luke felt like too much. It was clearly a plot device and the authors must have decided to use it to make the audience see the passion between the two. Madison is a normal girl who was married to one of the most popular actors in Hollywood. To be fair he was her high school sweetheart and she married him before he rocked to superstardom. As is the case with many of these stories, Jason, the ex, has a widely publicized affair and Madison divorces him. Her pain is relatable even if the rest of the story is not. I'll just point blank tell you that the best part of the books were the intimate scenes between Madison and Luke. While I couldn't find myself being on board with them as an endgame couple, I absolutely appreciate characters who bring fire to the page.

The Not So Good

I'll start with Luke.  He just doesn't do it for me. Luke is way too moody, emotional and insecure. While he does save Madison early in the book, it just feels too rushed for both of them to go from single and miserable to falling in love. Madison is clearly in a rebound situation as her divorce is still fresh. Luke also comes off as a bit controlling which is a turn off even for me who loved Mr. Grey from that other series. Even a surprise financial reveal doesn't make him the bee's knees for me.

The Verdict

This book is part of a series that features different authors for each book. Each book is titled as a misadventure and I'd be open to reading more of the series. I didn't expect much from the book and was decently surprised. While it wasn't the best book I've ever read, it wasn't terrible. Plus it was a very fast read! But if you're looking for substance, you won't find it here.

A Unneccesary Change of Pace

January 27, 2018 0 Comments

I really wanted to like the latest Mercy Thompson book “Silence Fallen”. In fact, I was so excited to read it that I went through the motions of requesting it from my local library. I was wondering about my choices after I started reading.

In this installment, Mercy finds herself abducted after being attacked during a grocery run. She is taken to Europe by one of the most dangerous enemies she and the group have ever faced. Mercy has to survive a new continent using her only her survival skills because the trip has left her without the comfort of her husband or aid of her pack bonds.

The Good

Mercy is the same strong-willed interesting character she's always been. She is a coyote and walker that lives in a mostly werewolf centered world. It was a blast watching her tap into her necromancy powers which she uses several times throughout the book. I loved that she had a chance to save herself. That's a welcome change from many books in this group genre. One of the things I love most about the series the strong cast of characters who are consistent from one novel to the next. The group gets larger but it was a good opportunity to spend more time with characters mentioned in early books.

The Not So Good

Seriously I dislike books that take the main characters to other parts of the world. I've yet to read a book where this is done well. There is always something missing from the books which for me is the familiarity of a preexisting setting. When you spend 8 to 10 books setting a world for your characters to play it, I don't understand taking them away from it. The book has something I don't remember having to deal with before: a constantly changing timeline. It was difficult keeping up with the book events even with the author's amusing titles. This slowed down my normally speedy reading and was frustrating when trying to piece the events together at the end of the book.

The Verdict

This was a good book, but it wasn’t the strongest I’ve read in the series. If you love the books as much as I do it’s a forgivable fumble, but I hope the next one is much better.

Happy New Year!

January 05, 2018 0 Comments

Happy New Year!

I’m a few days late but I’ve certainly spent a lot of my downtime reading. I was able to finish up 2017 by exceeding my Goodreads goal of 35 by 4! I read 39 books last year even with my Master’s program, a new job, the social media business, my family and a small Netflix obsession. Really it was a miracle!

I enjoyed reading and my favorite book was the book I finished last. Year One by Nora Roberts was fantastic and haunting but I won’t spend time talking about that here. Check out my the post here to find out more about my experience.

Typically, this time of year is a time of reflection and I welcome it each year. I’m still here with all my fingers and toes though I’m sure my eyes have suffered a bit. (I’m really starting to appreciate those blue light filters electronics are adding). I’m still committed to sharing with you my first love: reading. Currently, I’m settled in with the second Chronicles of Nick book: Invincible which I hope to share with you soon. I also have another one on deck I’m crazy excited about!

This year has been a year of transition.  I’m proud of the work I’ve completed and a few projects in the works. This year I plan to do more… more reading, writing, and learning. Thank you for sharing your time with me! I appreciate all the views, thoughts and comments.

Here’s to hoping you have your best year yet!

My 2017 Book of the Year

December 28, 2017 0 Comments
I've been a Nora Roberts fan for most of my life. I'm an avid romance reader and her stories are always filled with the perfect blend of adventure, romance, and community. I have to admit though I've never read any of her other works until today. I think I may have missed out as Year One is a story unlike any I have ever read.

Year One tells the story of several characters whose lives intersect after a plague takes out billions of the population. There is no treatment and no cure in sight as strangers both human and not work together to survive.

The Good

This book terrified me. I spent the first hours reading it unable to put it down even though I was almost shaking with fear. Everything happened so fast and characters were suddenly more than human. Like other Nora Roberts books, it was written fantastically. I could see all the characters and their circumstances as if I was watching a movie.

Max and Lana were my favorite characters initially but I grew to love Arlys, Chuck, and Fred too. Each has a realism that makes them seem like people you know, a neighbor or best friend.  I was so invested in making sure that they all made it despite people around them dying in mass numbers. As you would expect, the government was non-existent because of The Doom and without order, people do insane things. No answers are given to the characters because while we do find out how it was spread, less time is spent on the why. Still, I was gripped by the choices each had to make and what it cost them.

I couldn’t help but be emotionally invested as my heart raced and broke with each page. I kept wondering what I would do if my normal world was shattered overnight. I was with every character considering their decisions and making some of my own.

The Not So Good

There isn’t much to dislike about this book. If I was being picky, I could say the beginning was a bit hard to follow as we were introduced to a family whose names I had a hard time remembering. I was able to catch up soon enough and can’t think of another thing I disliked.

The Verdict

If you love books about the end of the world as you know it and want to read a book that will pull every emotional string possible read this! I can’t wait for the next one that won't be released until next December.

Doesn’t every girl want to marry a billionaire?

Doesn’t every girl want to marry a billionaire?

Imagine the possibilities and I’m not even talking about the financial benefits. A billionaire like Reese Crane is a catch even when he doesn’t want to be caught. He’s gorgeous and complicated so it should make sense for Merina Van Heusen to be thrilled when he offers her the position in exchange for her family's hotel. She, however, is not interested in his offer until she realizes what she has to lose. Jessica Lemmon’s The Billionaire Bachelor shares the story of Reese and Merina relationship.

The Good

Reese and Merina are hot together! Their chemistry leaps off of the page as they trade barbs and get to know one another. Both characters find their marriage difficult despite the deal. They end up falling for each despite a disastrous start. Readers get a chance to really understand Merina and Reese who have real scars because of their previous relationships.

Another thing I loved was Merina and her best friend’s relationship.  Her beautiful successful best friend understands how imperfect life is as she navigates a renewed relationship with her ex-husband. It was great to see a story crafted in a real-world reality despite the obvious fairy tale concept.

The Not So Good

I don't understand how a 30-year-old woman who is supposed to be really good at her job still lives with your parents. That isn't normal but does support what we understand about Merina. She hasn't grown up because of a traumatic romantic experience. Her relationship with Reese helps her grow up. My only other complaint is that I wish we had spent more time with Reese's family to understand a bit more about his relationship with them. Readers gain some insight eventually but I had some questions I wished were answered a bit sooner. Its likely readers find out more about the family in later books.

 The Verdict

I’m hooked! First, I’m a sucker for a billionaire romance. Second, I loved how each character was able to shine and grow despite dealing with real issues that could separate the couple. They were able to overcome all obstacles even when those issues were internal. I’m ready for the next book in the series.
