I really wanted to like the latest Mercy Thompson book “Silence Fallen”. In fact, I was so excited to read it that I went through the motions of requesting it from my local library. I was wondering about my choices after I started reading.
In this installment, Mercy finds herself abducted after being attacked during a grocery run. She is taken to Europe by one of the most dangerous enemies she and the group have ever faced. Mercy has to survive a new continent using her only her survival skills because the trip has left her without the comfort of her husband or aid of her pack bonds.
The Good
Mercy is the same strong-willed interesting character she's always been. She is a coyote and walker that lives in a mostly werewolf centered world. It was a blast watching her tap into her necromancy powers which she uses several times throughout the book. I loved that she had a chance to save herself. That's a welcome change from many books in this group genre. One of the things I love most about the series the strong cast of characters who are consistent from one novel to the next. The group gets larger but it was a good opportunity to spend more time with characters mentioned in early books.
The Not So Good
Seriously I dislike books that take the main characters to other parts of the world. I've yet to read a book where this is done well. There is always something missing from the books which for me is the familiarity of a preexisting setting. When you spend 8 to 10 books setting a world for your characters to play it, I don't understand taking them away from it. The book has something I don't remember having to deal with before: a constantly changing timeline. It was difficult keeping up with the book events even with the author's amusing titles. This slowed down my normally speedy reading and was frustrating when trying to piece the events together at the end of the book.
The Verdict
This was a good book, but it wasn’t the strongest I’ve read in the series. If you love the books as much as I do it’s a forgivable fumble, but I hope the next one is much better.
